I’m so grateful my sister kept me posted on Dad’s observations. He’s still with us……….though he still steps to the other side occasionally.

When my grandfather was passing, he too spent some time on both sides. The last time I saw him, I wrote down the things he said. Many of them were memories, bright shining moments of his life, purest expressions of his love. Your dad’s words, your arrangement of them, bring it all back.

The first time I heard Deb sing this one, I was speechless – it brought back memories of losing both my parents in the last 5 years and I wondered how she could get through playing it in concert. I remember shaking Deb’s Dad’s hand at her 50th birthday party at Nieman’s – my hand still hurts.

As I write this, we’re at the end of 2009 and the end of another decade. We’re all getting older – a reminder that we’ll all be in this boat one of these days. Better grab an oar….

Michelle and I were at the Glendale Folk Festival and I was going to request “Spring” before their set but figured Don & Deb had the tunes worked out – when “Spring” appeared, I had a smile a mile long. The perfect song for that setting, a beautiful spring morning in AZ. I wondered why Don had a sly grin on his face while singing the song and kind of thought it was because of who was in the audience but wasn’t sure until he confirmed it later.

“Spring” is a monster tune – they just don’t get much better than that. Some day we’ll have it on a CD along with Brady Butte and Deb’s new one – “Home” and others that we get to hear once in a while live. Until then, we’ll just keep showing up to hear whatever D2 has to say.

Folk Alliance is a blast- I’ve gone to 3 of the national conferences w/Don & Deb (Memphis, Cleveland, Albuquerque) and expect the upcoming Regional will be just as much fun although maybe not as overwhelming.

Just imagine a big hotel and conference center just filled to the brim with our people – like-minded and focused on good music. Music is everywhere – lobby, hallway, hotel rooms, formal showcases, informal showcases. I always went with a list but rarely followed it with a few exceptions. I still listen to many of the acts I first heard at Folk Alliance when not many people had heard of them.

See you there? You will not be sorry…………

I, too, remember when the saquaros stood like soldier sentinels in the desert. I saw everything your lyrics painted like a moving picture in my mind and felt a stab at the heart. I haven’t heard this song but I know the music will be as powerful as the words.

Yippy is the perfect dog – I know that because she’s not like any of our dogs or any dog we’ve ever had. Hmmm – wonder if there’s a pattern developing there.

Yippy and Mitchy-Boy renewed their friendship earlier today and probably rehashed old times back in Mayer when they were puppies.

Chills, chills and tears. If you think this is just a song protesting abuse of public lands, play it again a few times and listen to the lyrics and let them pull you deeper and deeper into the sands of understanding the darker side of our valiant nature.

Most people don’t write well when they’re pissed off, as a rule. Tend to wax a bit self indulgent. Don is a brilliant exception.

Don & Deb are perhaps my favorite songwriters on the planet, perhaps even the whole Big Sky Full of Dumb Stars.
